Channel 4 Drama 'Pierre' Explores the Troubles of a Duty Solicitor
David Harewood stars as Pierre Jeffreys, a criminal lawyer juggling personal and professional crises in a new Channel 4 series.
The new Channel 4 drama "Pierre" centers on the multifaceted struggles of Pierre Jeffreys, a duty solicitor facing a cascade of personal and professional challenges. Played by David Harewood, Pierre navigates a life where his son has abandoned university for video games, his law office is in disrepair with a rodent infestation, and the practice is teetering on the brink of financial ruin, with wages being paid from roulette winnings.
The series, reviewed by Christopher Stevens for the Daily Mail, establishes Pierre's precarious situation early on, leaving the viewer to question the direction of the narrative as Pierre grapples with his mounting problems. His personal life is further complicated by a potential diabetes diagnosis, discovered during a consultation in a gambling den.
Adding to his woes are his challenging clients. One is Mad Miriam, a shoplifter accused of concealing stolen goods, including stockings, an electric toothbrush, sweets, and a spatula, in her underwear. Miriam claims divine instruction for her actions.
Another client, Michael, a young Black man who took his aunt's car without permission, presents Pierre with a moral dilemma. Despite the aunt's initial outrage and concerns about enabling negative behavior, Pierre persuades her to drop the charges. However, Michael's subsequent actions, including vandalizing property and spray-painting an accusation against a police officer, lead to further complications.
The drama culminates with Michael's death from a stabbing, with the officer in question, PC Tanner, observed nearby. Pierre, now vowing to find the killer, faces the daunting task of balancing this pursuit with his already overwhelming personal and professional responsibilities.
