Channel 4, a UK public service broadcaster, intends to cut 340 jobs by the close of the year, representing a reduction of approximately 28% of its current workforce. The decision follows a strategic review prompted by a "rapidly changing media landscape."

Priya Dogra, Channel 4's chief executive, stated that the job reductions are the "first phase of our transformation," aimed at ensuring the organization is adequately structured to execute its future strategy and increase investment in programming. The broadcaster, known for shows like "Gogglebox" and "The Great British Bake Off," aims to establish a more streamlined and efficient operational model while fostering greater investment in distinctive content.

"We need to secure and own our future so we can continue to make shows others won't, reach audiences others can't, and thrive as a distinctive and disruptive British voice for future generations," Dogra said in a statement. She acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, emphasizing its necessity for creating a "simpler, more focused and more sustainable Channel 4."

The announcement has raised concerns among staff. Caroline Dinenage, chair of the culture, media and sport committee, described the news as "deeply worrying for the talented and dedicated people who work at Channel 4."
