Chad Lowe's Daughter, 13, Died by Suicide, Medical Examiner Concludes
The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner has confirmed the cause of death for the actress's daughter, Fiona, following a heartbreaking announcement from the family.
The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner has confirmed that 13-year-old Fiona Lowe, daughter of actor Chad Lowe, died by suicide. Emergency services responded to the family home on Tuesday at 12:10 a.m., and the teen was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m. An autopsy report indicated that her body was subsequently released to her parents.
Lowe and his wife, Kim Painter, shared a statement on Tuesday confirming Fiona's death and expressing their profound grief. They described her as "a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance." The statement continued, "She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives."
The family urged anyone struggling with mental health to reach out to suicide prevention resources. Fiona is also survived by her sisters, Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10. Her grandfather, Charles Lowe, shared a tribute on social media, posting a photo of Fiona smiling in a pool and writing, "Rest in peace sweet Fiona."
According to reports, parents at Fiona's school received an email on Tuesday from the principal announcing a student's death, though the individual was not identified. The message offered condolences and informed the school community that counselors were available for emotional support.
Chad Lowe, who won an Emmy Award in 1993 for his supporting role on the comedy-drama series Life Goes On, has often shared his experiences as a father of three daughters on social media and in interviews. He previously reflected on being a "girl dad" on the Still Here Hollywood podcast in August 2024, calling it "an incredible privilege" and noting how it shaped his perspective on the world.
Lowe and Painter married in 2010. Their daughters were born in 2009 (Mabel), November 2012 (Fiona), and 2016 (Nixie). The actor previously was married to Oscar-winner Hilary Swank from 1997 to 2007.
