CEOs of Ford, Alphabet, and United Airlines Discuss Longevity and Innovation
Leaders from three major American companies shared insights on maintaining relevance, fostering innovation, and upholding company values during a TIME100 Talks panel.
Executives from iconic American companies—Ford, Alphabet, and United Airlines—recently convened for a TIME100 Talks panel to share their strategies for sustained success and relevance.
William Ford, executive chair of Ford Motor Company, emphasized the enduring importance of core values, stating, “We take care of each other. We take care of our communities. We take care of our country.” He differentiated these foundational values from culture, which he noted evolves over time, asserting that timeless values underpin a company's enduring strength.
Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet, highlighted the critical role of "a commitment to long-term investing" and "relentless focus on innovation." She credited Alphabet's founders with establishing "20% time," a policy allowing employees to dedicate a portion of their workweek to innovative ideas, which led to the development of Gmail and Google Brain, the company's first AI entity. Porat also advocates for ambitious goal-setting, suggesting that achieving 60% of set objectives in a year signifies success, as 100% achievement might indicate a lack of audaciousness in the initial goals.
Scott Kirby, chief executive officer of United Airlines, attributed the airline's lasting success to its identity as a "brand loyal airline." This loyalty is cultivated by focusing on four key areas: reliability, service, the physical product, and technology. Kirby expressed a desire for passengers to experience consistent improvements, stating, “I wanted them to get on an airplane and be surprised with something new that we have done.” He acknowledged the challenges in maintaining these standards, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he described as the "most existential financial crisis that ever existed in aviation," while reiterating his priority of protecting employees.
Looking toward the future, Kirby's primary objective is to establish conditions at United Airlines that prevent future employee furloughs. Porat outlined Alphabet's expansion plans, including the launch of an AI data center in space, which she described as a "tiny little step" in researching efficient infrastructure development. Ford expressed optimism for Ford Motor Company's continued success, aiming to remain "the most American car company" in 25 years and to enhance customers' lives by providing value and saving them time.
The panel also included discussions on future visions, with Kirby aiming to prevent future furloughs at United Airlines, Porat looking to expand Alphabet's business infrastructure into space with an AI data center launch, and Ford focusing on maintaining the company's identity and customer value.
