CEO, Daughters Shot in Toronto Home Invasion; Wife Struck With Hammer
Three masked assailants targeted the family in their affluent neighborhood, leaving four victims with severe injuries.
A home invasion in a wealthy Toronto neighborhood has left a prominent CEO and his family severely injured. David Morton, CEO of Mac Group, and his two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina Zohil-Morton, were shot during the incident, while his wife, Doriana Zohil, was struck with a hammer.
Toronto Police stated that three masked men, two armed with handguns and one with a hammer, broke into the Morton residence around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday. The assailants allegedly demanded valuables, leading to a struggle within the home. The suspects fired their weapons multiple times before fleeing the scene in an SUV. The extent of any items stolen remains uncertain.
All four family members were transported to the hospital. Toronto Police Inspector Kristy Smith confirmed that two victims sustained "life-altering injuries," while the other two suffered severe but "non-life-threatening injuries." The specific injuries sustained by each family member were not disclosed.
Sources suggest the family attempted to resist the intruders, leading to the violent assault. Reports indicate Morton and one daughter were shot in the leg, and the other daughter was shot in the arm. Additionally, all four family members reportedly sustained blows to the head with a hammer.
Police have obtained surveillance footage from the home and are investigating the incident. Inspector Smith stated that there is currently no information to suggest the home was specifically targeted and that the motive remains unclear. She acknowledged a recent increase in violent home invasions in affluent Toronto areas, noting a shift from carjackings to home invasions for the purpose of stealing vehicles.
"People should be able to feel safe in their homes," Smith said. "I want to assure residents that the Toronto Police Service will do everything that we can to identify, locate, and bring these suspects to criminal justice."
The family resides in the gated Hyde Park Circle community, known for its multimillion-dollar properties. Authorities have yet to provide a description of the suspects.
