Celine Dion Revisits Iconic 1997 Oscars Look for Paris Performances
The Canadian singer donned a recreated Chanel gown and diamond necklace, echoing her memorable appearance 30 years prior.
Celine Dion recently showcased a reimagined version of the shimmering Chanel gown she first wore to the 1997 Academy Awards during her performances in Paris. This updated couture creation, reinterpreted by Chanel's creative director Matthieu Blazy, features thousands of jewels and beads, celebrating both fashion history and Dion's enduring style.
Accompanying the gown was an 18-karat white gold Chanel Comète necklace, set with 1,080 diamonds totaling more than 67 carats. The asymmetrical design of the necklace evokes a shooting star, a motif that mirrored the original piece worn by Dion during her iconic 1997 Oscars appearance.
The original gown was designed by Karl Lagerfeld, and its plunging silhouette paired with the starry necklace created a lasting red-carpet moment. At the 1997 ceremony, Dion performed "Because You Loved Me" and "I Finally Found Someone." The following year, she won an Oscar for her performance of "My Heart Will Go On" from the film Titanic.
This fashion callback coincides with Dion being honored with her own signature Barbie doll by Mattel. The doll is inspired by the navy dress she wore during her 1998 Oscars performance of the Titanic theme song and features a blue necklace reminiscent of the "Heart of the Ocean" from the film.
Dion, who recently returned to performing after a diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), expressed her honor at joining the Barbie legacy. She hopes the doll inspires others to express themselves with confidence and pursue their dreams.
Dion's return to the stage for her Paris residency has been marked by both triumphant moments and health challenges. In a recent concert, she became emotional and briefly forgot lyrics, with the audience assisting her. Footage also indicated a moment where she lost her balance while singing, though she quickly recovered.
Despite these challenges, Dion has stated her intention to make her health battle 'my reason for living.' The Canadian singer is currently in the French capital for a five-week residency.
