Celeste Frozen Pizzas Discontinued After Nearly 60 Years

Conagra Brands has announced the discontinuation of Celeste frozen pizzas, a brand that has been a familiar presence in supermarket freezers for nearly 60 years. The decision, revealed during the company's first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call on September 30, is part of a broader strategy by Conagra to streamline its extensive product portfolio and shed brands deemed unprofitable or lacking future growth potential.

CEO John Brase stated that Celeste was among the smaller brands that Conagra no longer believed warranted continued investment, describing some brands as "really unprofitable" or low-profit. While the discontinuation of Celeste slightly reduced first-quarter sales, Conagra anticipates that the move will ultimately improve long-term profitability.

The cessation of Celeste production has prompted nostalgic reactions from consumers who recall the pizzas as an affordable and convenient meal option. Social media discussions highlighted the brand's popularity among students, bachelors, and those seeking a quick meal, with some users fondly remembering past promotions where multiple pizzas could be purchased for a low price. Many expressed sadness over the loss of what they considered a childhood staple and a convenient "broke-food" alternative to items like ramen.

Celeste's origins trace back to 1937 when Celeste and Anthony Lizio opened the Kedzie Beer Garden in Chicago. Celeste Lizio gained a reputation for her Italian cooking, and the couple later began supplying frozen pizzas and other Italian foods to local restaurants. Quaker Oats acquired the family business in 1969, expanding the brand's reach nationally. Celeste Lizio, known as "Mama Celeste," remained involved with the brand as a consultant and spokeswoman, with her image appearing on the packaging.

The brand has changed ownership several times, most recently becoming part of Conagra Brands in 2018 when Conagra acquired Pinnacle Foods. However, Conagra's current strategic direction focuses on reducing product complexity and concentrating resources on larger, higher-growth brands.

Conagra Brands has confirmed that existing inventory of Celeste pizzas will continue to be sold until supplies are depleted. After that point, the pizzas will no longer be available for purchase.
