Celebrity 'Traitors' Premiere Shatters UK Viewing Records

The second series launch episode of BBC's "The Traitors," featuring celebrities, attracted 9.4 million viewers, setting a new record for the show's premiere in the UK. Overnight figures indicate the episode peaked at 9.4 million viewers and averaged 8.9 million.

This viewership surpasses previous launches, including the first celebrity series, which garnered 6.5 million peak viewers, and the most recent civilian series opener in January, which had 6.9 million peak viewers. The total audience is expected to increase as streaming figures from BBC iPlayer are included.

The reality competition divides contestants into two groups: Faithfuls and Traitors. The Faithfuls aim to identify and eliminate the Traitors before they are 'murdered,' while the Traitors work to deceive the Faithfuls and remain undetected.

In the latest episode, host Claudia Winkleman selected Love Island host Maya Jama and actor Richard E. Grant as the initial Traitors. A new twist required them to choose a third Traitor from their co-stars, leading to a dramatic scenario where former Radio 4 host Amol Rajan and comedian James Acaster were placed in coffins, awaiting a decision on who would join the Traitors and who would be 'murdered.'

The episode also featured celebrity contestants participating in a challenge to win money for the prize fund. Ross Kemp and James Blunt led the team in retrieving gold treasure chests from a shipwreck, successfully adding £15,000 to the fund. Contestants are competing for up to £100,000 for their chosen charities.

The game's format, blending deception and deduction, has contributed to its popularity. The next episode is set to reveal the third Traitor and feature the first elimination.
