Celebrity Traitors' Premiere Draws Record Nine Million Viewers

The latest season premiere of the BBC reality competition "Celebrity Traitors" has achieved record-breaking viewership, drawing a peak of just over nine million viewers and an average of 8.9 million. This figure surpasses all previous premieres for the show, including its initial celebrity iteration and the most recent civilian series.

The strong performance is attributed in part to an unexpected twist involving contestants Richard E. Grant and Maya Jama, and a significant error by Grant. Overnight figures are expected to rise further as numbers for those who streamed the episode on iPlayer are factored in.

The series, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, divides contestants into "Faithfuls" and "Traitors." The Faithfuls aim to identify and banish the Traitors before they are eliminated, while the Traitors attempt to deceive the other players to win.

In the season's opening episode, Winkleman selected Love Island host Maya Jama and actor Richard E. Grant as Traitors. Producers introduced a new twist requiring the duo to select a third Traitor from a group of contestants who were then tasked with pleading their case. Former Radio 4 host Amol Rajan and comedian James Acaster found themselves in a tense situation, awaiting Winkleman's decision on who would join the Traitors and who would be banished.

This success for "Celebrity Traitors" contrasts with a reported ratings slump for "Strictly Come Dancing" following its announcement of a new hosting lineup, which includes Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe, and Josh Widdicombe. Viewers have expressed skepticism on social media regarding the new presenters.
