Celebrity Traitors Contestants Accused of Breaking BBC Rules to Profit
Several participants on the BBC reality show 'Celebrity Traitors' are reportedly exploiting their appearance for financial gain, in violation of the broadcaster's guidelines.
A number of contestants on the BBC's popular reality show 'Celebrity Traitors' are allegedly capitalizing on their newfound fame to promote personal ventures and products, in what appears to be a breach of the broadcaster's strict rules. The BBC's guidelines prohibit stars from exploiting BBC programs or brands in advertisements or promotions.
Singer James Blunt was among the first to face repercussions, reportedly being reprimanded by the BBC for promoting a £1,695 tweed suit he wore on the show via his personal X account. He was instructed to remove the post advertising Barrington Ayre, the suit's tailor. Blunt also allegedly used his appearance to promote tickets for his 2027 'Airplane Mode Tour,' with face value tickets ranging from £50 to £135. In now-deleted social media posts, he shared clips from the show and directed followers to purchase tour tickets, using the hashtag #thecelebritytraitors.
An industry source commented that while this year's cast is aware of the show's popularity and the potential for success that comes with it, they must be careful not to cross the line. The rules have been clearly explained, and BBC bosses expect contestants to adhere to them.
However, the temptation has proven too great for many, with a significant number of celebrities reportedly leveraging their participation for personal profit. Comedian Miranda Hart, who has been less visible on television in recent years, continues to operate an online store, 'The Miranda Shop.' This store sells merchandise such as tea towels for £16.99 and mugs for £14.99, featuring her well-known catchphrases. While a portion of the revenue goes to charities Astriid and Spear, the shop explicitly promoted its mugs on Instagram around the time the show premiered, encouraging viewers to "add some such fun to your sofa snuggles" while watching 'The Traitors.' Posts from The Miranda Shop have also utilized 'The Celebrity Traitors' and 'Traitors' hashtags.
Other contestants have navigated the rules more carefully but have strategically timed career moves to coincide with the show's airing. Comedian James Acaster is set to release his debut album with his band, The Wow! Scenario, titled 'Stand in the Star. A Verse and a Chorus.' The album's release, over two decades in the making, aligns with Acaster's prominent role in the reality series. While Acaster has stated the timing is a coincidence, he admitted he is "totally 'here for it'."
Comedian Joanne McNally has been promoting her Dublin stand-up tour, with tickets for an additional date at the 3Arena going on sale recently. Priced between €42.40 and €72.40, these tickets are nearly sold out. McNally is slated to appear on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' on October 19.
Maths professor Hannah Fry announced her 2027 tour, 'Come Fry With Me,' with tickets going on sale on September 25, shortly before the show's launch. The tour, described as an evening of 'chance, chaos and questionable decisions,' costs £30 per ticket. Fry was eliminated from the show during a recent episode.
Actor and singer Sebastian Croft released his new single, 'Good Light,' on a Friday, the same day his previous single, 'Pretty People,' was released during the week he joined the show. Croft commented on the parallel timing, stating, "They have been this thing on the horizon for so long, and it's so weird that both are starting to be put out into the world at the same time."
Former Little Mix singer Leigh-Anne Pinnock also released a new single on a Friday, just hours before episode six aired. Additionally, social media personalities like Maya Jama are reportedly earning significant amounts from TikTok and Instagram videos taken during the show, with one clip viewed 1.8 million times.
Even Channel 4 has found ways to capitalize on the BBC show's success, creating a dedicated section on its homepage for 'Celebrity Traitors' and highlighting contestants' appearances on Channel 4 programs. Comedian Joe Lycett also featured several 'Celebrity Traitors' co-stars, including Miranda Hart and Michael Sheen, on his Channel 4 show, 'The Lycett Arms.' Lycett's promotional materials for the pub often incorporated 'Celebrity Traitors' hashtags and visual elements.
