Celebrity Sues Media Outlets to Block Sex Crime Allegations, High Court Hears

A prominent individual, whose identity is being withheld, has initiated legal action against media organizations ITN and The Guardian in the High Court. The celebrity is seeking to prevent the publication of allegations, including a claim of sexual offense, that journalists from both outlets have investigated.

Represented by Sara Mansoori KC, the claimant's legal team stated that the individual suffers from "very serious mental health problems" and that the publication of the allegations could lead to suicide attempts. The celebrity is pursuing an injunction, a civil court order that restricts an organization from publishing specific information.

Mr Justice Nicklin, presiding over the case, acknowledged the contentious nature of the proceedings, remarking that "This case is going to be controversial either way it is decided." Injunctions in British law can be sought on a temporary basis if a party believes the actions of another could cause substantial harm. These requests often invoke human rights, such as the right to life or privacy, as outlined in the Human Rights Act.

Judges typically weigh such claims against the media's right to freedom of expression. A super-injunction, a more stringent form of this legal measure, not only prohibits the publication of information but also forbids any reporting on the existence of the injunction itself.
