Star stylist Rob Zangardi, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, and Suki Waterhouse, is forecasting several key trends in outerwear for the upcoming fall season. Zangardi, who also founded the coat collection Auter, emphasizes that luxury in clothing should prioritize both comfort and style.

"Every fitting taught me something about what people actually reach for, what makes them feel confident and what may look beautiful but does not work in real life," Zangardi told Page Six Style. His own brand, Auter, has been worn by celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Kim Kardashian.

The Peacoat's Evolution

Zangardi notes a resurgence of the peacoat, describing it as more fashion-forward this fall. "The new versions are oversized and sculptural, with rounded shapes, strong collars and unexpected lengths," he explained. He highlighted the Auter Italian Wool Peacoat, worn by Taylor Swift, as an example of a classic silhouette updated with a pleat that adds shape without being fitted.

Oversized Silhouettes Take Center Stage

Oversized coats with dropped shoulders and longer lengths, evoking a menswear-inspired feel, are predicted to be prevalent. "It always looks cooler when it feels a little stolen," Zangardi commented. He noted that celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez, and Kate Hudson have been seen in Auter's men's coats, supporting this trend.

Dramatic and Textured Coats

Zangardi anticipates a return to more playful and dramatic outerwear pieces. "A dramatic coat gives you volume and texture, then everything underneath can be incredibly simple," he said. He suggested pairing such a coat with a sweatsuit, letting the statement piece stand out. The Auter Fox Jacket, worn by Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande, is cited as an example of this trend.

The Versatility of Belted Coats

Belted coats were prominent on fall runways, offering a way to alter a coat's silhouette. "Wearing a coat loose gives you volume and comfort. Cinching the same coat completely changes the proportion and gives it a new attitude," Zangardi stated. He advised that the belt does not necessarily need to come with the coat, suggesting the use of leather or vintage belts to change the shape and add personal style.

"A belt is cheaper than a new personality — and nearly as effective," he quipped.

Zangardi's insights come from his extensive experience as a celebrity stylist and his own design endeavors with Auter, aiming to bridge the gap between high fashion and practical, comfortable outerwear.
