The profound sense of loss and the longing for one final conversation with deceased loved ones is a sentiment many experience. For some, this grief is amplified by unsaid words, unanswered questions, and the pain of not having a proper goodbye.

This sentiment is echoed by Si King, 59, one half of the popular duo The Hairy Bikers. King lost his close friend and TV co-star, Dave Myers, to cancer in February 2024. Earlier this year, King shared a photograph on Instagram of a disconnected rotary dial telephone situated on the cliffs known as The Leas in South Shields. This "wind phone" offers a space for people to speak freely into the wind, conveying messages to loved ones, or even to those with whom they had complicated relationships.

King described the phone as providing an outlet for those who find it difficult to express certain feelings, even when surrounded by others. "Something like this gives people an outlet. A quiet place. A moment. A way of letting those words go into the wind," he wrote.

The concept of the "wind phone," known as 'kaze no denwa' in Japanese, originated in the northern Japanese coastal town of Ōtsuchi. Garden designer Itaru Sasaki created the first "wind phone" in 2010, installing a white telephone booth in his garden as a personal coping mechanism after the death of a close cousin. Following the devastating Tōhoku earthquake in 2011, Sasaki opened the booth to the public, offering a space for others to find solace through symbolic one-way conversations. Sasaki's initiative has since inspired similar installations worldwide.

Now, a number of well-known personalities, including Rob Rinder, Jo Wood, and Derek Redmond, have shared their personal "letters to Heaven" with the Daily Mail. These heartfelt messages, described as surprisingly hopeful and humorous, reflect enduring bonds that transcend time.

Rob Rinder is a supporter of Sudep.org, a UK charity assisting families who have lost loved ones to sudden epilepsy-related deaths. Derek Redmond is represented by the London Keynote Speakers agency. Ore is a Celebrity Ambassador for the suicide bereavement charity Suicide&Co. Paul is a keynote speaker with the Champions Speakers Agency.
