The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a safety alert concerning a nationwide outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella infections, with alfalfa sprouts identified as the likely source. The outbreak has resulted in at least 55 reported illnesses across the country.
Two individuals in New York have fallen ill as a result of the contaminated sprouts. While no deaths have been reported, four people have required hospitalization. The CDC has linked the outbreak to suppliers Everything Sprouts and Calco.
Officials are advising consumers to discard any alfalfa sprouts currently in their refrigerators. They also recommend thoroughly cleaning any surfaces or items that may have come into contact with the sprouts using hot, soapy water. Businesses have been instructed to stop selling or serving affected alfalfa sprouts.
Symptoms of E. coli and Salmonella infection can include diarrhea and fever exceeding 102 degrees Fahrenheit. If diarrhea persists for more than two days without improvement, or if experiencing extreme vomiting or severe dehydration, medical attention should be sought. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for more severe illness requiring medical intervention.
