CDC Chief Medical Officer Resigns After Six Months
Dr. Jennifer Shuford, who joined the agency in April, is departing to spend more time with her family.
Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the chief medical officer and deputy director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has resigned from her position. Her last day with the federal health agency will be November 12, according to a statement released Tuesday.
Shuford stated that her decision to leave is to "spend more time with my family." She expressed gratitude to President Trump and Secretary Kennedy for the opportunity to help lead the CDC, calling the experience "amazing."
Dr. Erica Schwartz, the CDC's director, acknowledged Shuford's contributions in a separate statement. "I am deeply grateful for Dr. Shuford's outstanding leadership and commitment to CDC and public health, especially as she has navigated an exceptionally demanding, high-profile and constantly evolving environment over the past several months," Schwartz said.
Shuford was hired for the chief medical officer role in April. In the interim, Satish Pillai will assume the responsibilities as acting CDC chief medical officer and deputy director.
