Catherine Zeta-Jones Addresses Husband Michael Douglas's Memoir
The actress stated she has not read her husband's tell-all book detailing past affairs and their relationship.
Catherine Zeta-Jones has broken her silence on her husband Michael Douglas's recently published memoir, "One Helluva Ride," stating she has not read the book.
Speaking on the "Today" show, Zeta-Jones, 57, humorously explained her lack of engagement with the memoir, which details Douglas's past romantic relationships, including affairs with co-stars Kathleen Turner and Jeanne Tripplehorn, and his courtship of Zeta-Jones herself. "As much as I love my husband, when I'm tired at night, I have no intention of reading about him at all," she quipped.
Douglas's memoir recounts his meeting with Zeta-Jones at the Deauville American Film Festival in 1998. He details making her wait nine months before they became intimate, noting that he continued to see other women during their initial courtship. He also revealed that he invited a stable couple to his holiday home in Mallorca to offset his perceived reputation as a lothario.
Zeta-Jones confirmed that she insisted on monogamy early in their relationship, prompting Douglas to end his other liaisons. The couple married in 2000 and have two children, Dylan and Carys. The memoir also touches on their marital difficulties, including a brief separation in 2013 when Douglas battled cancer and Zeta-Jones was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. Douglas clarified that their separation was mutual and that they have since reconciled, emphasizing the work involved in maintaining a long-term marriage.
In the book, Douglas also addressed affairs during his first marriage to model Diandra Luker. He admitted to a relationship with Jeanne Tripplehorn during the filming of "Basic Instinct," for which he sought and received her permission to include in the memoir. Tripplehorn reportedly initially hesitated to become involved with a married man but was assured by Douglas that he and Luker had separated. Despite this assurance, Douglas kept their affair private.
Douglas also confessed to an affair with Kathleen Turner while they were making "Romancing the Stone" in 1984. At the time, Douglas was married to Luker, and Turner was dating her future husband. Rumors of their affair reportedly led Luker to confront Turner on set. Turner, who had previously denied the affair, has since reacted with a statement saying, "Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book."
Zeta-Jones encouraged others to read the memoir, saying, "The book is called One Helluva Ride and I think everybody should hold onto their cowboy hats, because I think it is." She appeared unfazed by the book's contents during her public appearance in New York City, dressed in a black leather outfit.
