Cate Blanchett has won a planning dispute to create an extensive garden at her property in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall. The Oscar-winning actress and her husband, Andrew Upton, purchased the five-bedroom eco-home for £1.6 million in 2022 and received planning permission to demolish the existing cottage.
The planning battle focused on the construction of a new wall and the creation of a large garden area. Blanchett's representatives had previously argued that the garden was essential to the property's ecological credentials and would provide a secluded space for the family. Local council planning officers had initially recommended refusal of the amended plans, citing concerns over the development's impact on the landscape and the potential for increased noise and disturbance.
However, Blanchett's team successfully appealed the decision, with a planning inspector ultimately granting permission. The inspector's report highlighted that the development would not unduly harm the character of the area or the living conditions of neighbors. The approved plans allow for the creation of the grand garden, which is intended to complement the existing eco-home.
