Catalina Island, a picturesque island off the coast of Southern California, has been recognized as one of the best islands in the continental United States. The destination was included in Travel + Leisure's annual World's Best Awards list, which is curated based on reader surveys and is considered a significant honor in the hospitality industry.
In the national ranking, Catalina Island secured twelfth place with an overall guest score of 81.98. The 76-square-mile island, with Avalon Bay as its focal point, has long attracted nature enthusiasts and sailing aficionados.
Located approximately one hour by ferry from the Port of Los Angeles, Catalina Island is celebrated for activities such as glass-bottom boat tours. Travel + Leisure highlighted the island as an ideal day trip or overnight stay from the Los Angeles area, describing it as an "easy, breezy, California-style Caribbean getaway—no passport required."
While Catalina Island was a notable entry, the top honor for the best island in the U.S. went to Georgia's Golden Isles. This archipelago, comprising St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island, received an overall score of 91.59 from readers. The Golden Isles were recognized for their historical significance, beaches, golf offerings, and secluded luxury.
Other Notable Rankings
Beyond the top island distinction, other destinations also received accolades. Mount Desert Island in Maine and Nantucket in Massachusetts took second and third place, respectively, in the U.S. island category. Nantucket was described as a "postcard come to life" for its preserved coastline and pre-Civil War homes.
In a separate category, Appellation Healdsburg, a resort situated within Sonoma County's wine region, was named the No. 1 resort in the continental U.S. and the best resort in California by Travel + Leisure. The hotel expressed gratitude for the early recognition in its debut year, acknowledging the impact of traveler opinions in shaping the industry.
Previously, St. Simons Island, part of Georgia's Golden Isles, was named the most underrated travel destination in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report and was also recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the best small towns for a summer getaway and a top retirement spot on the East Coast. The Golden Isles also ranked eleventh in the world's best islands category.
