Carson Benge Makes Case for Rookie of the Year
Mets outfielder believes strong finish warrants award over competitors.
New York Mets outfielder Carson Benge has emerged as a contender for the National League Rookie of the Year award, citing his strong performance to conclude the season. Benge, 23, acknowledged his competition, including Cincinnati Reds first baseman Sal Stewart, whom he described as "a great dude" and "a Jesus man."
"But I feel like I would be deserving of the award in the most humble way possible," Benge stated. "I don’t mean to come off cocky."
Benge's strong finish to the season is seen as a key factor in his candidacy. He aims to become the third Mets player to win the award in the 21st century. He also faces competition within his own clubhouse from teammate Nolan McLean. Additionally, the Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt had a notable rookie year, though a late-season injury may have impacted his chances.
After an initial challenging period, Benge has become a foundational player for the Mets' future. His performance has positioned him as a significant figure for the organization.
