Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is facing early scrutiny after his squad suffered a significant defeat against Hull City on the opening day of the season. The loss has raised concerns about the team's ability to build on Carrick's previous achievements.

Despite the disappointing performance, Carrick has publicly maintained a calm and consistent message, a stark contrast to the more emotive approaches of some of his predecessors. "Nobody is getting carried away," was his repeated mantra, even after the unexpected loss to a newly-promoted side. Carrick, however, acknowledged the internal disappointment. "Inside we're hurting. The boys know, and we need to get better. But the calmness doesn't mean that there's no emotion in it, for sure," he stated.

Carrick, who celebrated back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal upon his return to Old Trafford in January, is known for masking his emotions. His measured approach has been seen as an antidote to the public displays of his predecessor, Ruben Amorim. However, the defeat to Hull has reignited questions about the current squad's capacity to progress.

He emphasized that while he doesn't advocate for public displays of frustration, the result is unacceptable for a club of Manchester United's stature. "It's 100 per cent not that, trust me," Carrick said when asked if his calm demeanor might be perceived negatively by fans. "It just doesn't mean that we all have to shout and scream and create some chaos just because of it."

The team's performance saw key new signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans struggle to make an impact. Carrick anticipates a stronger squad for the upcoming match against Ipswich, with players like Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount potentially available. The manager has several tactical options to consider, including potential returns for Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot, as well as adjustments to the forward line.

Carrick stressed that while it was a disappointing result, it does not alter the team's overall direction. "It's one game and results can happen in football, we all understand that. It's not nice when they do, but it does happen. We can be better, and we will be better," he said.
