Carrick Questions Man City Financial Case, Cites Personal Impact
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick expressed lingering questions and personal impact from the Premier League's financial charges against Manchester City.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick stated that he still has unanswered questions regarding the financial charges brought against Manchester City, a situation he described as having affected him personally.
The Premier League independent commission found Manchester City guilty of numerous breaches of financial regulations spanning the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. Manchester City has appealed the decision, with a resolution expected in early 2027.
Carrick, who was part of Manchester United teams that finished as runners-up to Manchester City in 2012 and 2018, reflected on the nature of winning. "In football, the strive to win, the emotion and the feeling about winning, a lot of it is in the moment," he said. "You can't take that back. It's the moment you strive for. That's essentially what we're all in it for."
He added that receiving a title winner's medal years after the event would not compensate for the missed opportunity at the time. "Regardless of anything, in any sport in history, if later on you get the medal, it doesn't bring the feeling of when you initially win or you don't."
While not privy to the specifics of the case, Carrick believes a swift resolution is crucial for all parties involved. "It's thrown up a lot of questions," he commented. "Some had answers, some haven't. Certainly, I've got my own questions about it. It's affected me personally in different ways over a period of time."
Carrick emphasized the unprecedented nature of the situation, stating, "The sooner it gets sorted, for everyone's benefit, is essential. It's unprecedented, a unique situation to be in at this level, with such a huge impact in so many ways. We all need to know what's going to happen."
Meanwhile, Manchester United supporters have displayed a banner referencing the years since Manchester City last won a trophy, a tradition dating back to 2000. The current iteration signifies 50 years since City's 1976 League Cup victory, prior to the club's acquisition by Sheikh Mansour.
