Michael Carrick, manager of Manchester United, has held discussions with captain Bruno Fernandes at the team's Carrington training ground. The meeting follows Fernandes being dropped from the starting lineup for the team's recent defeat against Bournemouth, a decision widely seen as a response to Fernandes' public criticism of the team's tactics after a Champions League loss.
Fernandes was notably absent from the starting XI for the match against Bournemouth, with manager Carrick confirming the player was fit and available, indicating the omission was disciplinary. This followed comments made by Fernandes after Manchester United's 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League, where he questioned the team's pressing strategy and suggested a lack of bravery under pressure from the staff.
"It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them," Fernandes had said. He added, "Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable." When pressed on whether his comments were aimed at Carrick, Fernandes stated, "That's on the manager and staff to say, not me."
Carrick's response at the time was pointed, suggesting that players needed to increase their effort, stating, "if you don't run – you don't run forward and you don't run back – you aren’t going to win."
Following his exclusion from the starting team against Bournemouth, Fernandes appeared to express his discontent indirectly by liking an Instagram post that read: "Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care." This action, coupled with his earlier comments, highlighted a growing tension between the player and the manager.
In addition to the team's on-field struggles, Fernandes recently experienced a home burglary in Cheshire, where jewelry and other valuables were stolen. His family was not present during the incident.
The meeting between Carrick and Fernandes aims to resolve these issues and reintegrate the captain into the squad. Carrick's own position as manager remains uncertain, with the team experiencing a winless streak of eight games. Despite this, the club confirmed Carrick will remain in charge for the time being.
In other team news, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has resumed training at Carrington, offering a potential boost as the team prepares for its next match at Stamford Bridge.
