Carrick Confident in Man United Job Despite Deepening Relegation Fears
Manager Michael Carrick expressed belief he will retain his position despite Manchester United's continued slide in the Premier League standings following a defeat at Chelsea.
Michael Carrick remains confident in his role as Manchester United head coach, even as the team's recent loss to Chelsea has pushed them closer to the relegation zone.
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, the latter converting a penalty after Lisandro Martinez received two yellow cards in quick succession, secured a 2-0 victory for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This result saw Manchester United drop to 17th place in the Premier League table. Earlier in the week, club officials had granted Carrick additional time to improve the team's performance this season, but the club is now without a win in nine consecutive matches.
When asked about his position ahead of the upcoming Champions League match against Roma, Carrick stated, "Yes. I'm just looking forward to getting the boys ready for the midweek now." He acknowledged the emotional toll of the club's current standing, noting, "There is a lot of emotion. We're a great football club and we want to win football matches. Things have gone against us in a big way and unravelled quickly."
Carrick admitted, "There is no hiding from the fact that we haven't won enough games." He emphasized the potential for rapid improvement with wins, stating, "You can look at how far you can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches. So that's the way it's got to be approached, for sure."
Regarding Martinez's red card, Carrick acknowledged its significant impact on the game, particularly in relation to the second goal. "It has a major importance on the game. A huge moment. I think that is pretty obvious really," he commented. "The second goal and losing the man at that stage had a big influence on it, for sure."
Manchester United supporters at the stadium continued to voice their support for Carrick while directing criticism towards the club's owners, the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and director of football Jason Wilcox.
In related news, Chelsea's manager Xabi Alonso noted that Estevao's performance provided a selection dilemma after the young player demonstrated his potential. The 19-year-old Brazilian, making his first Premier League start of the season, had two goals disallowed for offside and created other scoring opportunities. Alonso praised Estevao's competitive response, stating, "He’s given me reasons (to pick him). This is football and sometimes you don’t get what you want, but the best way to show it is not by being angry, it’s by being competitive and Este has done it really well."
Alonso also commended Romeo Lavia for his performance, stepping in for the unwell Jordan Henderson in midfield on short notice. "From a midfielder point of view, for me it has been a top, top performance," Alonso said. "He's done so many things right. He’s been always connecting the defence with the attacker players, he's been able to switch the game, he's taken many right decisions, he's been very dynamic, competitive. I'm very happy for him and he deserves a huge recognition for his performance."
