Carrick Calls Leeds Draw a 'Fresh Start' Amidst Man United's Struggles
Manager Michael Carrick acknowledges external noise but believes his team can overcome a difficult period, despite a draw at Elland Road.
Michael Carrick stated he employed 'headphones' to block out external pressures surrounding Manchester United, viewing their 1-1 draw at Leeds as a potential 'fresh start' for the team. The manager expressed no doubt in his side's ability to improve their performance, despite acknowledging that a recent record of two wins in 10 games is not ideal.
The build-up to the match was notably overshadowed by Lisandro Martinez's post-match comments to club officials earlier in the week. Martinez himself was substituted at halftime during the Leeds match due to a thigh issue.
'It’s been quiet inside the club but the headphones have been on this week,' Carrick said. 'I spoke to the boys this morning about what the game is, the history and what it means to the supporters, to the football club, to us coming over here into their territory and what it takes to win here and get a result. It definitely tests you if you come here and you're not quite there. I take a lot from the way we went about it.'
Carrick suggested the draw offered a sense of a new beginning for the team. 'We're not getting too carried away because we haven't won the game. But it I felt like a bit of a fresh start, to be honest, in terms of where we're at, and accepting it and doing something about it.'
Manchester United currently sit 13th in the league standings, having secured only one Premier League victory against Ipswich Town earlier in the season.
'I understand the situation doesn't look too good if you look at it from a certain way, but I got no doubts that we can go on a good run,' Carrick added. 'Listen, we're not accepting it as everything's great by any stretch, so I'm realistic about that. But sometimes you do struggle. There has been a cycle at times here over a period of time when it can go in different directions. We have got to be stable enough to keep doing the right things as a group.'
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Manchester United in the first half. However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized for Leeds shortly after halftime from a corner.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire commented on the concession of the set-piece goal, stating, 'To concede a set-piece after half-time is disappointing. When you come to places like this, you can't be beaten on set plays and we conceded a set play which got them back in the game. We can be better. We have to show more quality with the ball. But you can't question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight. This is a tough place to come. Leeds have been flying in the league. We got a foothold at about 70 minutes and probably looked the more likely to go and win it, but a draw is probably fair.'
Leeds manager Daniel Farke expressed disappointment that his team did not secure all three points, despite a strong performance following their recent defeat against Arsenal. 'We took it as a compliment that we have done many things right over the last month if we were seen as favourites against Manchester United,' Farke said. 'We have earned this and we wanted to prove the comments right. I felt it was not necessary to be losing at half-time, but it is still Manchester United. In the second half, we got the equaliser and we should have kept up the dominance. We should have won the game, but we move on.'
