Carole Baskin Urges Restraint After Tiger Attack
The 'Tiger King' star expressed sympathy for the victim's family while defending the animal involved in the mauling.
Carole Baskin, known for her role in the Netflix docuseries "Tiger King," has urged authorities not to harm a tiger involved in a fatal mauling at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England. The incident occurred when a man entered the tiger's enclosure on Saturday. Baskin stated that the tiger "was not doing anything wrong by being a tiger" and expressed relief that the animal was unharmed.
In a statement, Baskin conveyed her condolences to the family of the deceased. "My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life today at Yorkshire Wildlife Park," she said. "No family should have to endure such a devastating loss, and my thoughts are also with those who witnessed this tragedy."
Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to ending the exploitation of big cats in captivity, emphasized the importance of their work in light of such incidents. "Tragedies like this remind us why that work matters," she added. "My hope is that this terrible loss will lead to meaningful reflection about our relationship with wild animals, and a future where both people and tigers are safer because we have chosen to protect wild cats where they belong: in the wild."
The attack unfolded when the unidentified victim entered the Siberian tiger's enclosure. South Yorkshire Police reported that emergency services attended the scene, but the man was pronounced dead. The police confirmed the tiger posed no threat to the public and remained in its enclosure, unharmed.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park closed for the weekend following the incident. Authorities are investigating how the man gained access to the enclosure. The "Tiger King" series gained widespread attention in 2020 for its portrayal of big cat owners, including Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.
