Carol McGiffin Criticizes Loose Women for 'Sanitizing' Opinions
Former presenter claims show bosses suppressed her views and demanded social media post removals, contributing to her exit.
Former Loose Women presenter Carol McGiffin has accused the show's bosses of "sanitizing" her opinions and stated that the program is "dying" as a result. McGiffin, who was a fixture on the panel for over two decades before leaving in 2023 due to contract disputes, shared her perspective on the "Suddenly Single" podcast.
McGiffin stated that she was frequently reprimanded and asked to remove social media posts that had "upset the powers that be." She suggested that these restrictions prevented individuals from expressing genuine opinions, leading to a watered-down on-air experience. "You want to hire people with opinions, let them have opinions. It's impossible now," McGiffin said. "You can't do that because the people higher up are being told that this is the line that they've got to follow."
She described the current state of mainstream television as "boring" and "dying," pointing to significant cutbacks in daytime programming at ITV, including reduced episode output for Loose Women and the axing of its studio audience. McGiffin contrasted this with her earlier years on the show, recalling a time when it was less policed and more open to diverse viewpoints. "When I look back at the old Loose Women I used to do from 2000, all the way until I left in 2013, they're completely different. There is so much offence. People take so much offence at so much and they never used to," she stated.
McGiffin's departure in 2023 followed a contentious contract negotiation. She revealed in her column for Best Magazine that ITV insisted on a new contract that she found "unjust and unworkable." This disagreement, she noted, was affecting her health.
Reports from The Mail on Sunday later linked her departure to a free speech controversy stemming from an interview on TNT Radio. In that interview, McGiffin expressed a sentiment that television and radio were more open environments in the past, with fewer restrictions and less sensitivity to offense.
ITV announced significant cuts to its daytime schedule in May 2025, affecting programs like Lorraine and Loose Women, with the stated aim of reinvesting resources into drama productions. This led to a reduction in broadcast weeks for both shows and a decrease in runtime for Lorraine, impacting the roles of regular guest presenters.
