Carnival Cruise Passengers Criticize New 'Crew Love' Stickers
The new initiative from Carnival Cruise Line, which places stickers on passengers' cards to identify those who have prepaid gratuities, has sparked debate among travelers.

Carnival Cruise Line has introduced a new program featuring "Crew Love" stickers, which are affixed to passengers' Sail & Sign cards to indicate that their daily gratuities have been prepaid. This initiative has generated a mixed response from customers, with reactions ranging from support to strong disapproval.
The program came to light when a TikTok user, Destiny, shared her experience onboard a Carnival ship, showcasing the sticker and soliciting opinions from viewers. One user commented, "I love it! We always prepay our gratuities and tip extra…I spend about $250-$300 extra tipping people." Another expressed a different sentiment, stating, "Stickers are for kids, not to shame guests."
In addition to the sticker, passengers who prepay their gratuities receive a card in their stateroom. The card reads, "On behalf of our entire team, thank you for prepaying your gratuities. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable, and enjoyable."
A Carnival spokesperson explained that the stickers and cards are part of an effort to acknowledge passenger generosity. "The Carnival gratuity program is an important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible," the spokesperson told Cruise Critic. "Our team members provide great service to every guest. The ‘Crew Love’ stickers and thank-you notes are simply a way to let our crew know that a guest has prepaid their gratuities, while giving those guests a little recognition for their generosity."
However, the initiative has also drawn criticism. "Wow, beyond tacky and truthfully, no one else’s business whether someone pays for grats pre, during, or at the end of the cruise," wrote one user on the Cruise Critic community forums. Many passengers questioned the necessity of the sticker, pointing out that the prepayment information is already accessible when the card is scanned by staff.
"I’m wondering why the sticker would be needed? I mean, couldn’t the fact that you pre-purchased the crew gratuities be on your details that come up every time the crew (like at a bar) swipes your card," asked another forum member.
Carnival's daily gratuity rates are $17 per person for standard staterooms and $19 for suites. Guests have the option to prepay these gratuities up to 11:59 p.m. the day before their cruise departs. The cruise line states that 100% of these prepaid tips are distributed among the onboard staff, including cabin stewards, servers, and other crew members. Passengers who wish to opt out of the automatic gratuity charge can contact guest services, a decision often made to save money or to distribute cash tips directly to crew members.
