Carlos Mendoza Hired by Phillies as Third Base Coach After Mets Firing

Carlos Mendoza has found a new position within the National League East, accepting a role as the Philadelphia Phillies' third base and infield coach. The announcement came Thursday from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, accompanying a series of coaching adjustments after the team secured Don Mattingly's continued tenure as manager with a new two-year agreement.

Mendoza, 46, spent two and a half seasons managing the New York Mets. He was hired by David Stearns and led the team to an unexpected National League Championship Series appearance in 2024, where they were eliminated by the eventual champions, the Dodgers. However, the Mets experienced a significant downturn in 2025 after a strong start to their season. The following year, facing high expectations, the team struggled early, including a 12-game losing streak in April. Injuries to key players like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto further impacted the team. A six-game losing streak in June ultimately led to Mendoza's dismissal following a loss to the Cubs on June 25.

Andy Green took over as interim manager for the remainder of the season before being appointed as the full-time manager with a three-year contract. Mendoza's coaching career prior to the Mets included a stint in the Yankees' minor league system from 2011 to 2017, followed by a position on the Yankees' major league coaching staff from 2018. He served as Aaron Boone's bench coach from 2020 to 2023. Mendoza concluded his tenure with the Mets with a record of 206-199. His move to the Phillies staff comes as the team also parted ways with hitting coach Kevin Long and infield coach Bobby Dickerson.
