Carlos Beltrán Noncommittal on Mets Managerial Job, Cites Family and Academy Commitments

Carlos Beltrán, an adviser within the New York Mets' front office, has stated that while he is not currently ruling out a future managerial role, his current commitments to his family and his baseball academy make such a position difficult to accept at this time. Beltrán, who is free to offer organizational support without a fixed location, is considered a potential candidate for the club's upcoming managerial search.

Beltrán had a brief and controversial tenure as the Mets' manager in 2020, which ended amid the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. The team reportedly discussed the possibility of him taking over for Carlos Mendoza earlier this season, but Beltrán declined at that time. When asked again recently, he remained publicly noncommittal.

"Being a manager in Major League Baseball is a huge commitment — a very, very huge commitment," Beltrán said. "And I’m not saying that I’m not willing to take that commitment, but right now, at the position where I am today in life, I love to be a dad. I love to be a husband. I love to be involved in the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico. And being a manager, I would not be able to do that full time."

He did not explicitly reject the idea of interviewing for the position and suggested he might consider managing at a later point if he remains involved in baseball. Beltrán returned to the Mets organization as an adviser to then-general manager Billy Eppler in early 2023, having unofficially assisted the club prior to that.

Fellow Puerto Rican and Mets star Francisco Lindor spoke highly of Beltrán, stating that he believes Beltrán would succeed if he pursued the managerial role. "If he decides to pursue it and if they feel like it’s going to be the best thing for the organization, I think he’s going to succeed at it," Lindor said. "He’s somebody that’s very respected, but to be a manager is not about respect. It’s about knowing the game and making the right moves at the right time and connecting with players, and I think he can do all of those."

Interim manager Andy Green echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence in Beltrán's potential to excel in a managerial capacity.

In other team news, outfielder Jared Young remains on the concussion injured list, though his condition has improved with a milder headache. Pitcher Devin Williams is progressing in his recovery from a shoulder strain, having thrown his second live batting practice session. If he responds well, the team anticipates activating him during the upcoming road trip. The Mets also activated Cionel Pérez from the 15-day injured list and optioned pitcher Cameron Weston to Triple-A Syracuse.
