Care Home Nurse Struck Off After Swindling Elderly Resident Out of £750,000
Rebecca Louise Burwood manipulated a vulnerable 99-year-old woman, spending the stolen funds on personal expenses including cosmetic surgery and home improvements.
A nurse has been struck off from the profession after swindling a vulnerable 99-year-old woman out of £750,000, which she then spent on personal luxuries including cosmetic surgery, a new car, a campervan, and home extensions.
Rebecca Louise Burwood, the former deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, North East Wales, manipulated the elderly resident between 2017 and 2023. The tribunal heard that the woman was particularly vulnerable after a fall and lacked family support. Burwood's actions included taking the pensioner to a solicitor to have her home valued at £400,000 and subsequently convincing her to sign the property over to Burwood in 2018, moving her into the care home.
During this period, Burwood also obtained a Lasting Power of Attorney for the resident, a fact she failed to disclose to her employer. This arrangement initiated a prolonged period of alleged coercion and emotional blackmail, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing.
In total, Burwood stole approximately £370,000 over five years. This included £20,000 for a car and £9,000 for a campervan, which Burwood claimed were for day trips. She also asserted that home improvements were made for the elderly woman's potential future accommodation during pandemic lockdowns, although evidence suggested the extension was initiated before the first lockdown was announced. Funds were also used for utility bills and council tax.
Burwood also withdrew £160,000 in cash from the pensioner's bank account via ATMs between 2017 and 2023. She told the tribunal that the resident, referred to as Resident A, had requested these withdrawals for weekly charitable donations, often between £250 and £500, to charities supporting the blind or those with heart conditions. Burwood claimed she would either place the cash in charity collection pots or hand it directly to shop staff, stating Resident A did not want any money left to the government upon her death. She admitted to not keeping records of these withdrawals or donations.
North Wales Police launched an investigation in March 2023 after the pensioner's bank reported the matter. During an attempt by Burwood to unfreeze the resident's account, bank staff reportedly heard her 'blackmailing' the woman, threatening to withhold access to her money and prevent her from leaving the care home. The attempt to unfreeze the account was unsuccessful.
Later that month, another nurse overheard Burwood telling the elderly woman, "I will give you the money back," and instructing her to "sign here" and "not sign here." This was reported as evidence of financial abuse, leading to Burwood's visits being supervised. Burwood, however, claimed she was merely asking the resident to sign a condolence card for a mutual friend, asserting the resident's poor eyesight necessitated her assistance.
Safeguarding officials visited the woman on May 10, 2023. She stated she did not wish to pursue action, believing Burwood had learned from her mistakes and valuing their friendship. Consequently, North Wales Police closed their investigation.
Flintshire County Council referred the case to the NMC in June 2023. The NMC has now ruled that Burwood must never practice as a nurse again, citing the "sustained, calculated" theft from a "vulnerable" individual. The NMC panel concluded that Burwood had exploited the trust placed in her by Resident A, who relied on her for social contact, and "weaponized" this relationship to acquire funds through manipulation and coercion. This conduct was deemed to fall "seriously short of the standards expected of a nurse" and constituted serious misconduct.
In her defense, Burwood stated she viewed the resident as her "nana," as an explanation for crossing professional boundaries. The elderly resident has since passed away, leaving behind sufficient funds for only 23 months of care before potential council intervention.
