Cardinals Trade Marvin Harrison Jr. to Seek Second-Round Pick

The Arizona Cardinals have informed wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. that he is being traded, signaling an end to his tenure with the team just three seasons after he was a first-round draft pick. Harrison will be inactive for the upcoming game against the Detroit Lions as the team finalizes the deal, which ESPN first reported and OutKick has confirmed. The Cardinals are reportedly seeking a second-round pick in exchange for the receiver.

Sources suggest the Cardinals may have intentionally allowed the news to leak without initially disclosing the trade destination, potentially to encourage other teams to increase their offers. Harrison, the son of Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, was the fourth overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, his production has declined over the past year, with questions arising about his effort and body language.

New head coach Mike LaFleur had previously defended Harrison's performance, attributing some struggles to different running styles and defensive coverages that limited opportunities. LaFleur also cited subpar quarterback play as a contributing factor. Despite these explanations, the team's decision to trade Harrison follows weeks of speculation, fueled by his eligibility for a contract extension and the emergence of Michael Wilson as a more productive receiver. Harrison currently ranks fifth on the team in targets.

Despite general manager Monti Ossenfort's statements on October 9th that Harrison was a "big part of what we’re doing," the team appears to have shifted its strategy. Harrison's rookie season showed promise, with 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns, but a significant Year 2 jump did not materialize, nor did it occur in the current season.

Multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring Harrison, including the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers. The Cardinals' reported asking price is a second-round pick. The situation highlights a potential strategy of trading a former first-round pick for a later-round selection after receiving limited return on their initial investment.
