Car Slams Through Texas Backyard, Narrowly Missing Children

A vehicle crashed through a backyard fence in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sunday evening, narrowly missing a toddler and two other children playing nearby. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the Heritage Place neighborhood when a 22-year-old driver lost control of their car.

Surveillance footage captured the moment the car breached the fence and sent debris into the yard. The Van Dusen family, whose children were present, stated their 2-year-old was "just inches away" from the car's path. The family expressed their fear that their 5-year-old twins, who were in the pool, could have also been injured or killed. "In a matter of seconds, our home and our backyard — places where our children should be completely safe — became a scene where we were forced to face the possibility of losing one of our children," the family said in a statement.

Neighbors have reported ongoing issues with speeding and reckless driving in the area. "Every day from 3 o’clock till 10 o’clock, at least, I go to bed at 10 — at least for those several hours, it’s constant," said resident Toni Gunter. "And then you just heard an explosion and you just knew there was a crash."

Fort Worth City Councilmember Charles Lauersdorf acknowledged the problem, noting that long stretches of road in new developments often lack measures to slow drivers. He stated that a stop sign is expected to be installed within 30 days, and a traffic study will be conducted to assess the need for a stoplight.

Fort Worth police confirmed that the driver was cited for the incident. According to the Texas Transportation Code, reckless driving is a misdemeanor that can result in a fine of up to $200 and/or up to 30 days in jail. The Van Dusen family stated that a citation is insufficient given the danger posed to their children, emphasizing that "A fence can be repaired. Property can be replaced. But a child’s life cannot." They expressed a desire for the incident to lead to meaningful change.

The Fort Worth Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
