A car hire firm has issued a full refund and made a donation to an animal charity after wrongly charging a customer for specialist valeting due to alleged pet hair on a returned vehicle.
The customer, H.C. from Birmingham, rented a car from Green Motion at Birmingham Airport during Easter. The initial hire cost was £154, which was paid in advance. However, the final cost doubled because the customer did not have a credit card, necessitating the purchase of an excess waiver insurance premium for £156.
Upon returning the car, the customer was informed of a £96 valeting charge, with the firm alleging dog hairs were found on the seats. The customer stated that neither they nor their wife own a dog, nor had they given a lift to anyone with a pet.
After the customer complained, the valeting charge was reduced from a standard £150 to £96. However, following intervention, Green Motion reviewed the case and decided to refund the entire charge. The company stated that while the rental location believed the charge was applied in line with their policies and available information at the time, they recognized the customer disputed the vehicle's condition upon return. As part of their commitment to customer satisfaction, a full refund was offered.
Green Motion also made a £150 donation to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. The company spokesperson indicated that specialist valeting charges may be applied in cases involving allergens like pet hair to ensure vehicles are prepared to a safe standard for the next customer.
The customer provided photographs taken of the car's interior upon return, which showed no signs of pet hair. Green Motion also submitted photos, date-stamped shortly before the hire ended, that appeared to show fur on the footwells and seats. The firm maintained its stance that specialist cleaning was required, though it ultimately agreed to the refund.
This incident highlights common frustrations in the car hire industry, including unexpected charges and disputes over vehicle condition. The article notes that excess waiver insurance, often pushed at the hire desk, can be significantly more expensive than standalone policies. It also emphasizes the importance of carrying a credit card for car rentals, as many firms require one to pre-authorize the excess amount, which can range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds.
