Capybara Pup Celebrates First Halloween at Edinburgh Zoo
Six-month-old Bru, the first capybara born in Scotland in 18 years, experienced the holiday with special treats.
Edinburgh Zoo celebrated Halloween with its youngest resident, Bru, a six-month-old capybara. Bru, who was the first of his species born in Scotland in 18 years, received a special trick-or-treat experience as he marked his first spooky season.
The young capybara enjoyed pumpkins, squash, carrots, and bamboo leaves provided by zoo staff. Bru's parents, Luna and Rodney, were also seen partaking in the festive treats.
The public named Bru, a decision influenced by the typical birth weight of capybara pups, which ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms, similar to the weight of a six-pack of the Scottish soda Irn-Bru. Bru now exceeds the weight of more than 36 cans of the popular beverage.
Earlier in the year, keeper Jonny Appleyard expressed pride in Luna and Rodney's care for their new offspring, describing the pups as 'especially adorable.' He noted that Bru was beginning to explore more, though often closely followed by his mother. Appleyard also advised potential visitors to see the new arrival at its cutest stage, as capybara pups grow quickly.
