A CGC 9.0-graded copy of the 1941 comic book "Captain America No. 1" sold for $713,804.43 at a recent Heritage Auctions event. This sale was the headline lot in a four-day auction that collectively brought in $941,925 from comic sales.

The "Captain America No. 1" originated from the Merrimack Valley Collection, a recently discovered hoard of high-grade comics from 1940-41. The collection's condition was noted as particularly striking, given its origin as an original-owner collection that had been stored for approximately 75 to 80 years.

Other notable items from the Merrimack Valley Collection also performed well at auction. The original art for the cover of Detective Comics No. 68 from 1942, which featured Two-Face's first cover appearance, sold for $47,304.

Additionally, the first nine issues of Batman were part of the auction. A 2.5-graded copy of Batman No. 1 achieved $158,600, while a 9.0-graded copy of issue No. 9 sold for $103,700.

Aaron White, vice-president at Heritage Auctions, commented on the significance of the collection, stating, "For an original-owner collection that spent the last 75 or 80 years in a cardboard box, the condition of the books was stunning." He added that the results demonstrated collectors' appreciation for top-condition examples of foundational Captain America and Batman issues.
