Candace Owens, a conservative commentator, has released a video clip she asserts is previously unseen security footage of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, further fueling conspiracy theories surrounding the case. Owens presented the footage on her podcast on Tuesday, claiming it offers a new perspective on the Sept. 10, 2025, shooting that occurred at Utah Valley University.
The video, which Owens alleges was obtained from a government source, purportedly shows a figure in black sprinting across the roof of the Losee Center approximately one minute and 20 seconds before Kirk was shot. The footage appears to depict the individual executing a "lateral crawl," which Owens suggested is a military maneuver, before crawling to the building's edge. From there, the figure allegedly retrieves an item from a bag or their person before moving towards another section of the roof.
Owens claims this newly released footage was presented during the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of Kirk's assassination, which took place from July 6-10. While court reports confirm security footage was played during the hearing, the specific content of that footage was not detailed by officials.
The dissemination of this video has amplified existing conspiracy theories regarding Robinson's alleged role in Kirk's death. Alex Jones, who was previously ordered to pay substantial damages related to his false claims about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, asserted on X that the footage proves Robinson did not fire the fatal shot. Jones and other conspiracy theorists argue the video contradicts claims that the shooter carried a rifle in his pants or had a limp.
Charging documents for Robinson, 23, state that he walked with an "unusual gait" characterized by "very little bending in his right leg," which authorities contend is consistent with concealing a rifle. Initial documents did not specify how the weapon was assembled, but later filings suggested Robinson used a red-and-black screwdriver to assemble a Mauser Model 98 .03-06 bolt-action rifle on the roof. Prosecutors maintain that substantial evidence supports Robinson facing trial for murder. He has pleaded not guilty to seven charges related to Kirk's death.
Robinson's attorneys have argued that the prosecution's claims are based on circumstantial evidence and disputed eyewitness accounts. The case is scheduled to return to court in September.
Owens, a former employee of Turning Point USA, has been vocal in suggesting the organization may have been complicit in Kirk's murder. She previously served as the Communications Director for the conservative youth organization from 2017 to 2019. Turning Point USA has not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the recent video release or Owens' allegations.
Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, has publicly urged Owens to cease promoting conspiracy theories about her husband's death. "Stop. That's it. That's all I have to say. Stop," she stated in 2025.
