Canadian Military Parachutes Troops After Deadly Gas Explosion at Alberta Base

Canadian military personnel parachuted into Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday night following a gas explosion and subsequent fire during a live-fire exercise that resulted in at least seven deaths. The incident occurred at one of the country's busiest military bases, located approximately 130 miles east of Edmonton.

Dramatic video captured members of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) landing at the base to assist in the response. A physician familiar with the situation described the event as a "one in every 15 to 25-year disaster."

Initial reports indicate that a gas line was struck accidentally during the training exercise, triggering a wildfire. Military sources confirmed to Global News that at least seven individuals are feared dead and numerous others sustained injuries. The exact number of casualties is still being determined as authorities work to contact next of kin.

In response to the high number of casualties, a "code orange" response protocol was enacted in Edmonton, directing patients to local hospitals. The public was urged to avoid the emergency department at the University of Alberta Hospital to ensure capacity for those affected by the incident.

Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital, noted the overwhelming scale of the patient influx, calling it a "disaster." The mayor of Wainwright expressed concerns that the tragedy might be the largest mass casualty event the community has ever experienced.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged the impact on "many of our brave military personnel," while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the fire as "serious."

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is a vast training area, covering roughly 235 square miles, and is known as one of Canada's largest and most active military training grounds. Training activities frequently take place in open fields, forested areas, or in structures designed to simulate urban combat environments.
