Canadian Mayoral Candidate Investigated Over Pothole Repair Campaign Video

A mayoral candidate in Cambridge, Ontario, is under investigation after filming and sharing a campaign video of himself repairing a pothole in front of a woman's home. Ryan Bolender, who owns a construction company, has been accused of violating city bylaws regarding construction on public streets without a permit.

The video, which Bolender has since removed, was intended to highlight what he described as the city's unresponsiveness to service requests. He stated he obtained permission from the homeowner, a woman with mobility issues, before undertaking the repair. Bolender told CTV that the homeowner had expressed significant frustration with the city's inaction on the road condition at the end of her driveway.

However, city officials were displeased with Bolender's actions. The candidate acknowledged that the video may have contravened campaign regulations and was taken down at the city's request. He confirmed his cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

Bolender is one of six candidates vying for the mayoralty in Cambridge. He suggested the video was a strategic move to gain attention in a crowded field, noting its rapid spread across social media platforms, garnering thousands of views in less than a day.

Political scientist Anna Esselment commented to CTV that such campaign tactics, while attention-grabbing, can be a double-edged sword. She explained that while visually engaging content can be more effective than written platforms, it also opens candidates up to scrutiny regarding their understanding and adherence to municipal laws and bylaws. Esselment noted that a fundamental expectation for mayoral candidates is their commitment to upholding city regulations.

The City of Cambridge has confirmed that Bolender's video is "currently under active investigation" and that further updates will be provided later.
