Camille Fishel's Pre-Armory Art Show Draws A-List Crowd in NYC
Artist Camille Fishel previewed her new series at a private event attended by athletes, artists, and media personalities.
Artist Camille Fishel, partner of Fanatics billionaire Michael Rubin, hosted an intimate gathering at New York City's Zero Bond on Tuesday to preview her latest series of paintings before their debut at the Armory Show. The event drew a notable crowd of athletes, artists, and industry figures.
Fishel's work, represented by gallerist Adam Cohen, was showcased ahead of its exhibition at the Javits Center. Cohen, a former Gagosian associate who established his own gallery, A Hug From the Art World, to champion emerging artists, noted his early appreciation for Fishel's talent. Her series, titled “Bending Over Backwards,” features eight oil-on-canvas pieces, with four slated for display at Booth 128 during the Armory Show.
Among the guests were Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, artists George Condo and Rashid Johnson, photographer Sophie Elgort, media personality Gayle King, and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk. Also in attendance were Scott Sartiano, co-founder of Zero Bond; Michelle Hellman, wife of Adam Cohen and curator; Wendi Deng Murdoch; and comedian Keegan-Michael Key.
Towns, who recently curated an art show for Sotheby's with his wife Jordyn Woods, engaged with attendees about art, including works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, whose pieces were featured in his own curated exhibition. The couple's Sotheby's Contemporary Curated auction included works by Condo, Johnson, and others, with a VIP dinner held at the Sotheby’s Breuer building to launch the exhibition, which opened publicly on October 2.
Fishel stated that her artistic practice explores the various ways women are confined within societal expectations. Some pieces from her "Bending Over Backwards" series were reportedly sold prior to reaching the Armory Show floor.
Rubin, who also attended the event, recently launched Fanatics Studios and was featured in The Hollywood Reporter discussing his ventures into the entertainment industry. He is expected to attend the Armory Show to support Fishel's exhibition.
