Calum Best's mother, Angie, returns to UK after cancer treatment
Socialite Angie Best is on the mend and back in the UK after undergoing 'mistletoe' chemotherapy in Switzerland for colon cancer.
Calum Best has shared a heartfelt message celebrating his mother, Angie Best, as she returns to the United Kingdom following her treatment for colon cancer.
Angie Best, 74, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer that had spread to her liver in January, underwent an unconventional treatment known as mistletoe therapy in Switzerland. This therapy uses extracts from the European mistletoe plant, often in conjunction with traditional chemotherapy.
In July, she had announced that she was cancer-free after her treatments, but was later hospitalized due to an illness. Now, she is reportedly on the mend and has returned to the UK.
Calum Best, 45, posted a photo with his mother at the airport on Instagram, expressing his pride in her strength. "From me to you mother, I’m so proud of what a strong fighter you are, this last year has been hell and u have managed it with such grace," he wrote. He also thanked those who had supported them throughout the journey.
Angie Best confirmed her recovery in a video, stating, "I can officially say with gratitude and love that I am cancer free and healing." She described undergoing a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) to remove the remaining cancer, which had been significantly reduced by prior chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She noted that while the operation was major and required a recovery period before returning home, she was focused on healing and planning to "reinvent myself at the ripe old age of 74."
Mistletoe treatment has been used in parts of Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, for decades. Some proponents believe it can stimulate the immune system and improve patients' quality of life. However, its effectiveness as a cure is considered inconclusive by major UK cancer organizations, and it is not a standard approved treatment on the NHS.
Angie Best, formerly married to footballer George Best, had been dividing her time between the UK and a clinic in Switzerland for her treatment. Calum had previously shared details of his mother's diagnosis and set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical costs, describing her battle as an "emotional rollercoaster."
