Call of Duty Aims for Redemption Amidst Fierce Competition
Publisher Activision seeks to reclaim the top spot with Modern Warfare 4 after a disappointing year, leveraging fan feedback and the upcoming GTA 6 release as an opportunity.
Call of Duty, a long-standing titan in the video game industry, is making a concerted effort to recapture its former glory with its latest installment, Modern Warfare 4. The franchise faced a challenging year in 2025, with its previous release receiving mixed reviews for its single-player campaign and losing multiplayer players to competing titles. In response, Activision is implementing changes aimed at addressing community feedback and re-engaging its player base.
Addressing Player Concerns
Tyler Bahl, Chief Marketing Officer for Call of Duty, acknowledged that the previous year "missed expectations with our community." He stated that the company has "taken a step back" and "listened to them." A key change for Modern Warfare 4 is the introduction of an option for players to disable cosmetic items that have drawn criticism, such as novelty skins based on cartoons and pop culture crossovers. Bahl described Modern Warfare 4 as a "return to form" for the series.
Last year's game, Black Ops 7, saw a significant drop in sales, placing seventh in the U.S. video game sales charts according to analytics firm Circana, a notable decline from its consistent top-two position since 2009. In the UK, it ranked as the eighth best-selling game. Factors contributing to this downturn are believed to include its absence from the Xbox Game Pass subscription service at launch and increased competition from established rivals like Battlefield 6 and newer titles such as Arc Raiders.
Leveraging the GTA 6 Phenomenon
Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch just weeks before the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). While this proximity could be seen as a challenge, Activision views it as an opportunity. Bahl suggested that the massive interest surrounding GTA 6 could encourage more people to purchase new consoles or return to gaming, potentially benefiting both titles. He characterized Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6 as "the two biggest games of the year" but believes they occupy distinct spaces.
"More people dusting off their Xbox or their PlayStation, starting to play for the first time it gives an opportunity for more gamers to come in and play both of the games," Bahl explained. He also highlighted that GTA 6's initial release will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles, with multiplayer modes not available at launch, differentiating it from Call of Duty's offerings.
Campaign and Character Focus
Modern Warfare 4 is also positioned as the "epic conclusion" to the storyline of Captain John Price, a fan-favorite character portrayed by actor Barry Sloane. Sloane expressed excitement about returning to the role, noting the "love from the fan base since the get-go." He described the upcoming narrative as having "a lot of surprises, a culmination of all those pieces that we've been putting together coming together."
Other cast members returning include María Elisa Camargo as cartel leader Valeria Garza, who described the fanbase as "a tough crowd" that is "very smart, very story-driven." Mads Mikkelsen, known for his roles in "Casino Royale" and "Hannibal," joins the series as the mysterious antagonist, The Archer.
The social aspect of Call of Duty remains a significant draw, with Bahl emphasizing that "the number one reason people come to Call of Duty is not just for the combat or the gunplay, but it's actually because their friends are there." He underscored the power of this social connection for players.
