A recent survey indicates that residents of California possess a notably high level of confidence in their ability to compete against professional mixed martial arts athletes. The study, which polled 2,000 U.S. adults, found that 25% of Californians believe they could withstand a full-force punch from a UFC heavyweight without being knocked out.
Fighting Confidence Ranking
The EportsGG survey asked participants two specific questions: whether they thought they could endure a punch from a UFC heavyweight and whether they could deliver a knockout blow to a UFC fighter if they landed the first punch. Californians led the ranking for "fighting confidence," significantly surpassing the national average of 13.7% for those who felt they could take a punch.
Furthermore, 26.8% of Californians surveyed expressed belief in their ability to knock out a UFC fighter with an uncontested first strike. This confidence level is notably higher than that reported in many other states.
Expert Perspective
Lee Mitchell, a personal trainer with experience working with professional MMA fighters, commented on the survey results, attributing the high confidence levels among some groups to a disconnect from reality. "A UFC heavyweight’s punch isn’t just about power, it’s about how fast and precisely it’s delivered," Mitchell explained. "Most people have never taken a real punch in their life, let alone one from someone whose entire career is built around years of training in ways to hurt you efficiently."
He likened the experience of being hit by a professional fighter to "stepping in front of a moving car."
State Comparisons
Following California, Nevada ranked second in fighting confidence, with 21.7% believing they could take a hit and 17.4% thinking they could deliver a knockout punch. Texas secured third place, with 18.2% confident in their ability to withstand a punch and 21.8% believing they could land a knockout blow.
Other states with significant percentages of confident respondents included Georgia (17.9%), Colorado (15.2%), Arizona (15.1%), North Carolina (14.9%), Washington (14%), New York (13.9%), and Louisiana (12.8%).
In contrast, Michigan reported a more grounded perspective, with only 7.1% of residents expressing confidence in their ability to withstand a punch from a professional fighter. Many other states did not report sufficient "yes" responses to be included in the ranking, suggesting a higher degree of realism regarding such hypothetical encounters.
