California Woman Suffers Severe Burns After Being Set on Fire

A California woman sustained severe injuries, including second and third-degree burns across nearly a third of her body, after being doused with gasoline and set on fire at a homeless encampment. The incident occurred on July 11 in Oildale, Kern County.

Frances Lopez, 33, was reportedly visiting a friend in a tent when three individuals arrived and initiated a dispute over money. According to Lopez, one of the individuals retrieved a gas can, poured gasoline on her and her friend, and then ignited it. Lopez managed to extinguish the flames using the 'stop, drop, and roll' method and sought help from a nearby trailer park.

Emergency responders airlifted Lopez to a specialized burn center in Fresno. She required resuscitation twice during transport and initial treatment. The extensive burns affected her arms, back, legs, and face. After undergoing four surgeries during an eight-week hospital stay, Lopez was discharged in September.

Her recovery at home has been challenging, with extensive personal care required. Lopez has been commuting to Fresno for follow-up treatments, as there is no local burn center in the Bakersfield area. She has provided information about the individuals involved to an arson investigator but has not publicly named them due to fear for her safety, as only one arrest has been made in the case.

Lopez expressed frustration that her attackers have not yet been apprehended and stated that without an active public report or case number, obtaining victim resources and financial aid for her medical expenses has been difficult. She remains largely homebound, continuing physical therapy and awaiting justice.
