California Woman Explains Viral Decision to Sleep at Airport

Santeon Brown, a 29-year-old from California, has gone viral for her unconventional approach to travel accommodation: choosing to sleep on the floor of San Francisco International Airport rather than pay for a hotel.

Brown documented her experience in a TikTok video posted on October 15, explaining that she had booked a spontaneous $20 flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Upon arriving late at night, she decided that sleeping at the airport was a more sensible option than incurring hotel costs for a few hours of rest.

"I just stayed here overnight," Brown stated in the video filmed within the airport. "I didn’t get stuck, I planned it, and it was a good decision and a good time."

As an actor and nanny based in Los Angeles, Brown cited cost savings as a primary motivator for her decision. "We got in at night, so it didn’t make sense to spend money on a hotel just to sleep," she elaborated in the clip.

Beyond the financial aspect, Brown also expressed that staying within the airport's secure perimeter felt safer than navigating an unfamiliar city after dark, particularly for travelers who have already passed through security checkpoints. "Everyone’s been vetted, you know no one has any weapons or anything crazy," she remarked.

The video has garnered over 725,000 views, eliciting a range of reactions. "Some people thought it was insane or dirty, but there were also people that were very excited about it, or like, ‘Oh, I haven’t thought of this,’" Brown told People magazine.

Brown, an experienced camper who has slept in airports on previous occasions, emphasized that she arrived well-prepared. She brought a sleeping pad, a sheet, and her bonnet to ensure a more comfortable overnight experience. "I feel like people sleep in the airport all the time; I just feel what’s crazy about it is that I planned it," she told the outlet. "So I had my little pad and my bonnet and a sheet, like, I was ready to do it."

She added that sleeping at an airport could be more comfortable than sleeping in her car or on free public lands. While lacking shower facilities, she utilized public restrooms for her personal hygiene routine, including brushing her teeth, washing her face, and freshening up with baby wipes.

Her advice for others considering a similar strategy includes packing light and bringing personal comfort items that are part of their usual bedtime routine. "Think through what your bedtime routine is," she advised. "I like to be cozy and warm, so I made sure I had a cozy sheet."

In other airport developments, several international airports, such as Perth Airport in Australia and Singapore Changi Airport, have begun offering sleeping pods to assist travelers with jet lag during layovers. Mexico City's Benito Juárez International Airport was recognized in 2024 as North America's most sleep-friendly airport, based on amenities like massage chairs, lounges, armrest-free benches, and 24-hour food options.
