A California woman has been charged with murder in connection with the death of her friend, Anjana Hari, 35, who was allegedly struck and killed by an SUV on September 1. In a subsequent development, another close friend of the accused, Ann Mary Mathew, 40, was found stabbed to death less than two hours after Hari's death.

The incident involving Hari began around noon at the Mill Creek Apartments in Milpitas. According to a witness cited in a police affidavit, Hari was walking toward Anila Baby's blue Toyota Highlander when the vehicle allegedly surged forward and struck her. The witness described Hari as appearing relaxed and smiling, with no apparent confrontation preceding the event. After hitting Hari, Baby's SUV reportedly crashed into three parked vehicles before Baby fled the complex.

Hari sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 12:12 p.m. Initially treated as a hit-and-run, the Milpitas Police Department later determined the act appeared intentional. Captain Jason Speckenheuer of the Milpitas Police Department stated that "after further investigation and elements, it appeared that it was an intentional act on her part."

Police located Baby approximately one mile away in a Walgreens parking lot. According to Detective Tailor Goods' report to the court, Baby appeared incoherent, had visible injuries to her hands and legs, and was unable to answer questions.

At 1:53 p.m. the same day, San Jose police responded to a report at a residence on Linda Vista Street, where they found Mathew with at least one stab wound. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Both Mathew and Hari were reportedly close friends of Baby. The two deaths occurred at separate locations. While The Federal has reported allegations that Baby is responsible for both deaths, authorities have not publicly established a connection between Baby and Mathew's death in the materials available. Investigators have reportedly found forensic evidence, but its nature has not been disclosed.

Friends and community members have reportedly rejected speculation that job loss or depression were factors, stating they were unaware of any tensions between the women. The case has reportedly impacted the Bay Area's Malayalee community.

Baby is currently being held without bail at the Santa Clara County Jail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September 10.
