California Trainer Accused of Assaulting and Filming Student

A sports trainer at an elite private high school in San Jose has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student and filming the alleged assault, police said.

Kelvin Chiu, 31, who worked on the athletic training staff at Archbishop Mitty High School, was arrested after the student reported the alleged abuse to San Jose police. Investigators said a search of his phone yielded child sexual abuse material, prompting concerns that other students may have been victimized.

Authorities have not publicly named the school in their investigation, but police records identified it as Archbishop Mitty High School, a private Catholic institution with an annual tuition of $34,000.

Officers responded to the school campus on Mitty Way around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 after the student reported the incident. The teenager told officers that Chiu allegedly assaulted her while she was being treated for a sports injury and that he recorded the encounter on his phone.

Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force detectives obtained warrants for Chiu, his home, and his vehicles. On Oct. 9, they located him at his residence in Fremont, where they conducted a search. Chiu was subsequently arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.

He faces charges including annoying or molesting a minor, production and possession of child sexual abuse material, and sexual battery. Police stated that while no additional victims have been identified, Chiu's position of trust has raised concerns about the possibility of other students being affected.

The Catholic Diocese of San Jose confirmed Chiu's employment. Cynthia Shaw, a representative, stated that the student's family contacted school officials on the night of the alleged incident. Chiu has been placed on administrative leave, and the school is cooperating with law enforcement.

Shaw added that counseling services will be available for students requiring support. "Our first concern is for the student and family, and for all of our students and families," she told CBS News Bay Area. "We recognize the impact a situation of this nature may have on our students, and the school’s Counseling teams will be available to speak with students who may need additional support."
