California Towns Earn Spots on List of Best Small U.S. Cities

Two California cities, Santa Barbara and Healdsburg, have been recognized on a new list of the best small cities in the United States, according to Condé Nast Traveler's latest Readers' Choice Awards. Santa Barbara secured the fifth position, while Healdsburg ranked eighth, placing them among the top ten destinations nationwide.

These rankings are based on 798,867 votes from readers who rated destinations on factors such as food, culture, and architecture. The final scores are derived from the average of excellent and very good ratings.

Santa Barbara, often called the "American Riviera," offers a blend of coastal beauty and Mediterranean-inspired architecture. Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, the city is known for its Spanish Colonial Revival style, white stucco buildings, red-tile roofs, and approximately 300 days of sunny weather. With an estimated population of 86,422 and a median household income of $106,182, it provides a laid-back atmosphere distinct from the bustle of nearby Los Angeles.

Healdsburg, located in Sonoma County, offers a different experience centered around its wine country identity. The town has evolved into a culinary and wine destination while maintaining a relaxed character. Its historic downtown and plaza are compact and walkable, featuring galleries, shops, restaurants, and wine-tasting rooms. The local food scene prominently features Pacific Coast seafood and produce from surrounding farms. Healdsburg has an estimated population of 11,172 and a median household income of $103,554.
