Residents of Goleta, California, a coastal community near Santa Barbara, are expressing strong opposition to the opening of a gun store, Goodland Guns, located adjacent to the Here We Grow Early Learning Center. The firearms retailer is set to hold its grand opening on September 5, after relocating from its previous site due to a rent increase.

The proximity of the gun store to the daycare has become a focal point for community concern, with residents organizing rallies and launching an online petition to prevent the store's operation at the Hollister Avenue location. Parents have voiced worries about the safety implications for children attending the daycare and walking routes to nearby schools like Ellwood Elementary.

Goodland Guns owner Dan Ashton stated that the relocation was necessitated by his former landlord's decision to double the rent, forcing an urgent search for a new commercial space. He indicated that finding a suitable location in the region for a firearms retailer, which faces stringent state regulations, was challenging.

"The real issue is the crushing regulatory environment the State of California has created for small businesses," Ashton commented, suggesting that California's business climate and rising commercial costs are the primary drivers of the controversy, rather than the city's actions.

In response to resident concerns, Ashton has implemented measures such as installing a privacy screen along the fence shared with the daycare. He also mentioned that the business is adhering to security protocols similar to those at the adjacent former 7-Eleven property.

Goleta city officials have acknowledged the situation, noting that current zoning laws do not prohibit a gun store from opening at the selected location, as the business obtained its license in early June. However, the community outcry has prompted the city to explore potential changes to its ordinances.

Goleta City Manager Robert Nisbet confirmed that the city council is scheduled to discuss possible revisions to zoning rules or new ordinances on September 1. These discussions may include the creation of defined "sensitive zones" around locations like daycare centers, although any new restrictions are unlikely to affect Goodland Guns' current premises. Nisbet also noted the legal complexities, including Second Amendment protections, which would preclude a complete ban on gun stores.

The controversy has created a significant disruption in the typically tranquil community, highlighting the ongoing debate over the placement of firearms retailers in residential and family-oriented areas. Ashton expressed a desire for peaceful coexistence and has left his "door open to having a respectful conversation" with the daycare owner, Heather Robbins, though they have not yet spoken directly.
