Brayden Serrano, an 18-year-old from California, was paralyzed after a diving accident in a hotel pool during a family vacation in Maui. The recent high school graduate, who had been preparing to start Army boot camp, hit his head on the pool bottom, resulting in catastrophic injuries to his C5 and C6 neck vertebrae and spinal cord damage.
The accident occurred when Serrano dove headfirst into the water. Initially, a friend believed Serrano might be joking around, but when he remained motionless, the friend intervened and pulled him from the pool. Serrano, though unable to move his limbs, was conscious and able to communicate that he was in trouble.
Doctors at a Maui trauma center discovered the extent of his injuries. Surgeons removed his shattered C5 vertebra, replacing it with a cage and performing a spinal fusion to stabilize his neck. Serrano has undergone two successful surgeries but remains partially paralyzed in his arms and completely paralyzed in his legs. He spent time on a ventilator but did not sustain brain damage and can still speak.
His family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of an air ambulance transport back to Southern California, ongoing medical treatment, and rehabilitation. The family stated that his mother, an LAPD sergeant, may need to take time off work to care for him.
Before the accident, Serrano had enlisted in the Army and was slated to train as a drone specialist. His family expressed their determination to support his recovery, stating their commitment to helping him regain as much independence as possible, though the long-term outlook for his function remains uncertain.
