The body of Loretta 'Kay' Colwell Pilitsis, a 55-year-old teacher, was found on June 30, just steps from her Piñon Hills, California home. She had been missing since May 25, when she left her residence on foot.

Colwell Pilitsis, who taught with the Lancaster School District, was the subject of an extensive search that included K-9 units and an aviation team. Investigators were alerted to the presence of a body in the desert on Oasis Road following a report received last month. Officers responded to the scene around 8 p.m. on June 30 and discovered her remains within a five-minute walk of her house. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division is overseeing the investigation into her death, the cause of which has not yet been publicly released.

Colwell Pilitsis had been with her partner, Christoforos Pilitsis, for over a decade. Her cousin, Jon Fenton, announced her death on Facebook, expressing devastation but also relief that she had been found. Fenton noted that Colwell Pilitsis's legacy was how her death brought friends and relatives closer together. A friend, Tanya Quaife, also shared a tribute on Facebook, remembering Colwell Pilitsis's distinctive laugh and expressing the profound loss felt by those left behind.

No arrests have been made in connection with her death, and authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
